The new year has started intensively with several projects closing in the recent months. Thus, we thought we’d provide you with a glimpse into what Scala has been up to lately.
Scala has completed a total of seven closings within private equity and real asset strategies during the last 12 months. On February 12, we hosted the second Scala Alternatives Afternoon, the largest LP-only seminar focused on the alternative asset class in Finland, with approximately 100 investors. The program consisted of Hamilton Lane’s globally renowned market overview presented by their CEO Mario Giannini and their Head of EMEA Richard Hope, a keynote on politics and the macroeconomic environment by the former Governor of the Bank of Finland Erkki Liikanen, as well as of a panel with four opinion leaders from the Finnish investment scene discussing their experiences of investing in private markets.
2019 in review and the year ahead:
We completed seven fundraising projects within all the areas in which we have said we want to be active: supporting emerging managers in their first fundraising, helping established managers widen their group of LPs, as well as creating tailor-made solutions for investors. The investor base in the closed projects is highly international, including both European and South Korean investors. We expect the demand for the alternative asset class as a substitute to listed equities and fixed income to remain strong. In 2020, we will be fundraising for high-quality managers focusing on US buyouts, Nordic venture capital, European direct lending and European infrastructure.
Scala Alternatives Afternoon:
On February 12, approximately 100 Finnish investors, ranging from large family offices and foundations to the largest pension funds, participated in the second Scala Alternatives Afternoon. Hamilton Lane’s annual market overview is a much-awaited event all around the world and was now presented for the second time in Finland.
Our keynote speakers Mario Giannini and Richard Hope, CEO and Head of EMEA of Hamilton Lane, respectively, and Erkki Liikanen, former Governor of the Bank of Finland, gave their latest views on the current state of the market and where we are potentially headed. In our panel discussion Ira van der Pals (CIO of The Church Pension Fund), Timo Ritakallio (President and Group Executive Chairman of OP Group), Karita Meling (Head of Private Equity at Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company) and Jan Sasse (CEO of Tesi) shared their experiences from investing in private markets. All four panelists shared a continued belief in the future performance and growth of the private asset classes.
